Young Horse Vaccination
1. American Association of Equine Practitioners core vaccine protocol starting at 4 to 6 months of age.
2. Initial three-dose series to ensure memory (secondary) immune response.
3. The first two doses should be approximately 30 days apart.
4. The third dose should be approximately 60 to 90 days later.
5. When the series is administered early in the year, the booster vaccination administered approximately 12 months of age.
6. If the disease risk is high (EEE, WNV), consider starting the series at 3 months of age to ensure completion of the three dose series prior to height of the disease.
Mature Horse Vaccination
1. American Association of Equine Practitioners core vaccine protocol for EEE, WEE, VEE, tetanus, and rabies vaccination.
2. In the unvaccinated or unknown vaccination history horse, administer a second vaccination (booster vaccination) approximately 30 days following the initial vaccination.
Elderly Horse Vaccination
1. American Association of Equine Practitioners core vaccine protocol for EEE, WEE, VEE, tetanus, and rabies vaccination.
2. Based vaccination of the core vaccines based on the use of the horse, potential of the horse to be exposed to the diseases, horse population the elderly horse is associated with, and geographical location of the patient.
3. Maintain booster protocols as the white blood cell population responsible for immunity protection are reduced in geriatric horses.
4. Biosecurity protocols will significantly protect this population of horse in the event of disease outbreak.
5. Geriatric horses diagnosed with Cushings will benefit from treatment with pergolide therapy.
